What does full-spectrum CBD mean?

With the popularity of CBD products on the rise, all the terms associated with CBD can initially seem a bit confusing. What does full-spectrum CBD really mean? And better yet, is my CBD full-spectrum if it doesn’t contain THC?

To properly break down full-spectrum CBD, it is important to understand the very basics of the hemp plant.

Laying the Foundation: Hemp + Cannabinoids

The hemp plant contains cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Simply speaking, cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system in the human body (and in animals too, which is why CBD works for dogs as well).

Our endocannabinoid system contains receptors that react in different ways to the multitude of cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Hemp is naturally high in CBD and low in THC (both of which are examples of cannabinoids), and contains many others as well, including CBG, CBC, and THCV.

Further, the legal limit for THC in CBD is a very small amount, currently 0.3%, and should not produce a “high.”

Terpene Basics

Terpenes are the oils found in hemp and other plants that also interact or bind to receptors within the endocannabinoid system. Terpenes are what give the plant its fragrance, and are in the essential oils of plants.

What Are Flavonoids?

Flavonoids are a group of plant chemicals, or phytonutrients, that are found in almost every fruit and vegetable. There are many groups of phytonutrients, but flavonoids are the largest with over 6,000 different types. They are not only attributed to giving fruits and vegetables their vivid colors, but also for having powerful antioxidants.

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all of these naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found in the hemp plant, with each said to play a different role within our endocannabinoid system. Some believe that they work together synergistically to create what is known as an “entourage effect.” There have been some studies involving the entourage effect, but further research will determine if these claims are true.

Viridipharm’s Broad-Spectrum CBD

Viridipharm’s CBD contains all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids aside from THC. Our CBD oil is considered “broad-spectrum” because it contains zero THC.
