Why is third-party lab testing for CBD oil important?
With the flood of new CBD oil products on the market, there are a variety of companies to choose from. While this can also be a positive thing for CBD, consumers must be increasingly careful when buying from companies to ensure they are getting a safe, high-quality CBD product. So how can consumers be confident that their CBD oil is from a legitimate source? One of the best ways to tell is through third-party lab testing.
The CBD industry is currently self-regulated. For this reason alone, it is crucial for companies to have transparency surrounding their CBD products. With third-party lab testing, companies are able to provide an unbiased, factual report about their CBD oil. Three of the most important things companies should test for and their lab tests should show is the potency of the CBD, the presence of harmful chemicals, and proving their CBD oil is broad-spectrum. These aspects should all be clear on a lab report and back up any of the company’s claims regarding their CBD.
The Potency of the CBD Oil
Many companies have been outed for claiming to contain a certain amount of CBD while third-party lab tests proved much lower amounts were actually present. Third-party lab reports should indicate the potency of the CBD, and the amount should never be considerably less. When it is evident there is a discrepancy between the company’s claims and a lab report, it is a huge indicator that other aspects of the product may be off as well.

Along with CBD, the amount of THC present is important to provide through third-party lab testing. The current legal limit for THC in CBD products is 0.3%, so companies should be able to prove that they are in compliance with this regulation.
Presence of any Harmful Chemicals
Depending on the process a company uses for extraction, different chemicals should be tested to ensure any harmful solvents are not present. Viridipharm personally uses CO2 extraction as we believe it is the cleanest and most efficient way to extract CBD oil. However, some companies may use petroleum-based extraction which involves gases like Butane and Propane. Due to the toxic nature of these solvents, it is incredibly important for companies that use this method to provide third-party lab results with testing for these chemicals. Presence of Microbial Contaminants
In addition to residual solvents, high-quality CBD will have no microbial contaminants present. We test all of our batch oil for yeast, mold, E. coli, Salmonella, and coliform bacteria.
Proof the CBD Oil is Broad-Spectrum
The last important aspect to consider for third-party lab testing is the number of other cannabinoids present. CBD products can be broad-spectrum, full-spectrum or merely an isolate, and consumers should verify that they are getting what is advertised. Whether you want just an isolate, full-spectrum, or broad-spectrum CBD oil, the third-party lab results should verify what is actually present.
