Can CBD Oil Help You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

According to the CDC, tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, 70 of which are known to cause cancer. In a 2015 report, nearly 7 out of 10 adult smokers reported they wanted to completely quit smoking cigarettes. It is no surprise that smokers may attempt to kick the habit, but for many, abstaining from smoking is easier said than done.

People who decide to quit smoking cigarettes may have to deal with withdrawal symptoms including irritability, anger, and anxiety. If there are ways to mitigate the negative side effects and also the urge to smoke cigarettes, smokers may become more successful at quitting.

The Research on Using CBD Oil to Quit Smoking Cigarettes

So what does the research say? There have been a few studies in regard to CBD and cigarette consumption, however, further research may be needed on this topic to suggest that CBD is a potential treatment option for cigarette addiction.

2013 Study on CBD and Reducing Cigarette Consumption

A randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study in 2013 was conducted to see if CBD would reduce cigarette consumption in tobacco smokers. Twenty-four smokers took part in this study and all had the desire to stop smoking. The 24 smokers were randomized and half were given an inhaler with CBD, while the other half received a placebo.

For one week, whenever they had an urge to smoke, the participants were instructed to use the inhaler. Interestingly, the researchers found that participants given the inhaler containing CBD significantly reduced the number of cigarettes smoked by ~40%, while the participants with the placebo showed no difference in the number of cigarettes smoked.

2018 Study on CBD Use for Tobacco Withdrawal

In this study, researchers in the UK conducted a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study to see if CBD provided a promising treatment for tobacco withdrawal. One of the differences from the last study is that these 30 participants were not currently seeking treatment. Further, instead of an inhaler, these participants were either given 800mg of oral CBD or a placebo.

The findings indicated that the use of CBD subsequently reduced the desire and pleasantness of cigarette images after overnight abstinence. Researchers did not see that CBD affected tobacco craving, withdrawal or side effects.

Summary

Although some studies have been completed regarding CBD and cigarettes, further research is needed before it can definitively be said that CBD oil helps smokers quit smoking cigarettes. We will be sure to post any new research on CBD and cigarette cessation when it becomes available.
